Cycling in the province of Overijssel
This province consists of the Kop van Overijssel with National Park Weerribben-Wieden, Twente and the undulating Salland region. In National Park Weerribben-Wieden, water and land alternate. The area came into existence as a result of peat cutting: where peat had been cut, water would arise. The swamp forests, reed lands, ditches and lakes are home to exceptional plant and animal species. It is one of the most important peat bog areas in North West Europe. Do also take a look around Kampen and Zwolle afterwards. These cities used to be members of the influential medieval Hanseatic League and their past economic success is reflected in their opulent merchant houses, warehouses and churches.
The landscape of National Park De Sallandse Heuvelrug is totally different: heathlands, forests, drifting sands and ‘real’ hills such as Holterberg of over 60 metres high. You will need your bike gears in this area! In the west, Salland borders the river IJssel; according to some, the most beautiful river in the Netherlands. You will find country estates, vast river forelands and small villages here.
Twente is an extensive region with historic castles and country estates. It is reminiscent of a time when rich farmers had their farms renovated into spacious buildings. Enschede and Almelo used to be important textile cities. In short: you will struggle to fit everything in in Overijssel!
